Keeping it on the road
« on: May 09, 2011, 09:24:07 »
Hello All,
Greeting from Cambridge UK. This is my first post.
The first thing to say is a huge thank you to everyone who organises and contributes to this site. It is a fantastic effort.

About my car and me:
1967 230 Auto. Metallic blue. 103000 miles.  I’ve owned it for about 12 years.
I am in total awe of some of the pristine examples I see on the forum. I would love to restore my car to something like show condition, but I have to take a very sober financial approach to keeping it on the road, spend my money wisely, and do as much work as I can myself. I have no formal mechanical training but some of the things I’ve done include:
•   Block Rebuild (re-bored to plus 40 thou)
•   Linkage replacements and tune up.
•   The famous nylon bushes on the steering column (wonderful improvement)
•   Radiator re-core
•   Gearbox rebuild (called in the professionals for that one! The gearbox failed because over time, water got into the gear oil as the radiator failed)
•   Fuel pump rebuild (still have a leak problem with that – running on a temporary modern lash up)
I’ve made mistakes along the way I’m sure. (More of that in another post)

Although my car has never seemed particularly quick, on last years 1000 mile plus summer holiday I averaged 23 miles per gallon (imperial) so, I guess tuning can’t be too far off. (I’m a cruiser and not a racer)
I think my next job will be suspension rubbers.
I also need to think about bodywork as I have some nasty blisters breaking out around headlamps and arches. I don’t have the skill for that kind of work.

And so to the main point of my post.
Are there are any like minded members in my part of the world who would like to meet up informally from time to time to share experience, tips, tools etc in person? Feel free to contact.

If there is already something happening in that regard that I haven’t read about yet, please accept apologies in advance. I certainly don’t want to upset any existing arrangements

Regards

Steve

If you are willing to organise something on a regular basis, with maybe a good B&B close by
I am sure you will get some response. I think it just needs someone to kick it off maybe.

Hi Steve,

I'm in Bedford so we're not too far apart and you would be welcome to pop round for a chat at some time, my cars currently "at the menders" where it's been for the past 15 months but should hopefully be home soon. I've done quite a bit of tinkering and have a reasonable knowledge of these cars so may be able to point you in the right direction with any problems or issues. I've sent you a PM so just give me a call when you're ready.
