Sun visor cleaning success

I was finally watching the detailing DVD by Bob Whyte that I won at the PUB raffle two years ago and noticed that he recommended a product called "Mr. Clean Magic Eraser" for interior cleaning. Since I have had no real success  cleaning my sun visors - from bathroom spray cleaning foam to Scotch brite and mineral spirits - I gave it a try with the eraser.
What a surprise, it really works!    see photo.
The pads are not cheap but Walmart sells generic ones ('Miracle Cleaning Eraser') for quite a bit less.  They work on MB-Tex and leather interior quite well too.

I have also had good luck using these "magic erasers" to "erase" the haze that had accumulated on my chrome trim. Just keep them slightly damp and they really work wonders!

I will speak up and say I was a non believer, but no more!

When I bought my '70 280Sl someone had applied after market mirrors to each visor.   When I removed the mirrors that were simply glued to the visors,  I thought I would never be able to remove the outline of the mirrors.  I was not sure if it was grime or fading caused by years of sun rays, but i was thinking I would need to replace the visors to make them look properly.

After trying just about every cleaner possible (409, simple green, goo gone, several degreasers, etc,) I could still see the outline of the mirrors.  I tired a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it immediately returned the visors to a look of new.  Absolutely not fading or discoloration from where the mirrors were (or weren't).

I will admit I did not believe a sponge with no indication of what ingredients listed (do we really want to know?) and promoted as the cleaner to outdo all other cleaners, could do what other proven cleansers could not.  Boy was I wrong.

Sigh.... 

If only this would be available in South Africa as well. I have been struggling for years now to clean the light cream sun visors in my W114 with no real success.

it should work for the liner .. but depending on the spot. That is, you need to have something behind the fabric because you need to put some pressure on it, just as would do for erasing. In the corners where there is nothing but air behind the liner it may be difficult.

Those magic erasers truly do work wonders. I've used them to remove the sun damage/ dark discoloration on my MB Tex door panels and head rest piping. As an aside, their is no reason to repaint walls and trim as often either as they remove scuff marks of all sorts with incredible ease.

Found this on the internet......

 "Here is Holland it is sold as "Ballpro" (white block)
but also as sponges ; one side is blue sponge,the other side is the white eraser.
The white stuff from each looks the same and imo you can use either.
I've tried both and both work very well."

I don't believe that they contain any cleaning agents. The sponge itself is composed of some kind of micro abrasive material.

ok, thank you all for your remarks, but I still don't know where I can get Ballpro in the Netherlands. Any Dutch member that can help?

From what I have read on the internet, the foam is melamine and is made by BASF in Germany. There is some property that melamine foam has that acts as a very fine abrasive. From what I can tell, there are no cleaning agents. Look at "How it works" under magic eraser for a detailed report. Because it is a fine abrasive, I am sure you would want to use this for everyday cleaning, but maybe every now and then or for restoration.

Very interesting and informative. I know a guy who has used Gojo Orange type hand cleaner with success on these kinds of parts. Probably because of the similar abrasive type action of the pumice. But leave it to the Germans (BASF) to come up with another great product. They make Glasurit paint too. :-)
I used to like their catch phrase in commercials. At BASF we don't make the products you use every day. We make them better" or some thing like that.
