Since only the last 3 digits of the body number are stamped on the hood, it is conceivable that there could be many cars with those same 3 digits.

With the hood open, they would be near the top left corner (under hood drivers side closest to the driver) on a LHD car.

Yes. There should be 3 or 4 numbers to match the last 3 or 4 found on the data plate in the engine bay....

my body number ends with 461, with the car now located down in New Zealand. Current hood doesn't have any numbers but I'm guessing its not actually from my car based on prior repaired accident damage on LH side. Repair work included a new LH fender which would make a replacement more likely but you never know.

I can't find any Blue, but the color change is fairly thorough, so it might have been Blue. Where was your car from or where was it before it came to New Zealand?

Is it possible  that the info:  we have which states that the last four digits of the chassis/frame# was stamped on the bonnet/hood,soft and hard top , boot/trunk lid at the factory on production is an old wives tail/myth.
My 1968 280sl last four digits are 4288 this is on the plate on the bulkhead and is also stamped on the right hand chassis leg.
The bonnet/hood, soft and hard top cover and the boot/trunk lid has 3757 stamped on them,when i removed the green paint that the PO had painted it i got down to the original colour,the underside of the bonnet/hood was also in the original colour once i removed the black paint.
It would seem hard to believe that at some stage in the past the above parts were fitted that were all the same colour,it is also worth noting that there was no sign of previous accident damage.

 It seems you are confusing the chassis number (found on the right frame rail) with the body/aufbau number found on the body and paint plate. The tech manual states it correctly, also where the body and paint pate is located.

No, i am not confusing the two,i have a plate screwed on the right hand side bulkhead and on it is the chassis#, on the right hand side chassis leg is stamped the same  #.
The paint details are stamped on the plate on the left hand side adjacent to the relays.
I should have also reported in the above post that when i stripped the hard top down and i removed the old insulation, written in chalk on the panel that goes across the rear under the rear screen was 728,this is the paint code number that is stamped on the plate on the lhs.
So it would appear the hardtop was painted in the correct colour with 3757 stamped on it and fitted to a body with 4288 stamped on it.

Well, its certainly not a myth entirely, as the number on my hood and soft-top case (and hard I think -- will confirm) match my Aufbau Nummer on my Body and Paint Plate and the Data Card box 18...

My chassis number, of course, is different -- that one is on firewall plate, subframe chassis leg, and also the data card box b and box 5. (Early data card)

It seemed like a possible explanation since you where referring to the last four digits of  the Chassisnr in your statement above.
What's the VIN/Chassis NR. of the car and what's the production number of the car?
 If you have a picture of the body/paint plate you're referring to that might assist in  explaining the issue.
The best is probably to get the body/aufbau number from the datacard for the car, since the body/paint plate could easily have been
changed, for whatever reason.

I think you were still comparing the wrong numbers as this is definitely not an old wives tale. You should look at the last 5 numbers on the data plate on the left side where the relay tray is. 3 to 4 of those numbers should match the numbers found on the rest of your parts....

I now also have a hard top with the numbers 6664 on that same car which also don't match. Whose car did that originally come from? :-)....

Hello Hans and Tom,
I was informed by a so called expert that it was the last four numbers of the chassis # that was stamped on the  parts.
I should have checked in the Tech: manual first.
As you both so correctly pointed out it is the last four on the plate adjacent to the relays
All my # are correct,i must try harder,you cannot get the staff these days
