On the last day of february, at around 13:00 local time, our website stopped working. I logged a ticket at around 14:00 (when I noticed) but this did not yield a response. Only this morning at 09:30, after posting a second ticket did they manage to restore service to the website.
There is no danger of the company (
Leaseweb) going out of business, in fact they are expanding with datacentres in the US, Europe and Asia.
They did suffer an unfortunate incident with their shared storage architecture in their cloud platform. Our website is hosted on a virtual computer system (i.e. we do not have a dedicated physical computer system for our service, we share a really fast computer with a number of other websites) with storage that is also virtualised. The details of the problem are listed here:
http://leasewebnoc.com/en/maintenance/emergency-maintenance-cloud-nl-platform-2-1-2So at 16:34 local time on the 28th they repaired the problem, but I was unable to reboot the virtual computer from a distance (that part did not work), even until this morning. It needed intervention from their support people. However, because they had such a large backlog of tickets, it took them a while to respond.
I'd like to remind you all this was the first serious outage since we switched to Leaseweb... I do still have daily, full backups of the complete website on my own private server, and I do take a full daily database backup. So we are, and remain, protected.
