Drive v-belts
« on: May 13, 2004, 11:07:23 »
Anyone out there this afternoon?  With the BBB or similar?

If you've followed my recent posts, I eliminating the A/C on my 1971 280SL. I have to replace the alternator bracket with the non-A/C unit, and I need a different drive v-belt (v belt) for the alternator that will go around the water pump, and drive both the water pump and the alternator.

Well, lo and behold, I'm having trouble getting that belt. I'm also having trouble with the specs on the power steering belt.

Can anyone tell me the correct details for the belts?
Diameter and width, I guess?
The specs I THINK work are:
Power Steering:   13.0 x 750
Alternator:       10.0 x 900
...seem right?
but SLS shows 2 Alternator belts: 10 x 800 and 10 x 875
...what's up with that?
...what unit of measure are these numbers in?

I've hit many web sites' catalogs. If I wanted the old A/C belt set, I'd be ok. But I don't. The catalogs don't tell me which belt is which. I need to be sure I'm buying the right thing. I can't trust an on-line catalog.

Any help would be, ...well, ...helpful ;-)

Call Ray Paul of SLClassic 1-800-293-2358.  H might be able to get you the right belt.

William,
The first figure: 10 or 13 is the width across the top of the 'V' on the belt in mm.
The second figure 800 etc is the inside diameter of the belt.
I have a '68 280sl and the original belt on it was 10x935.
I believe different diameter pulleys were used on different alternators which changes the belt lenght.
With a/c your car probably has a 55 amp alternator. Don't know which diam. pulley was used on that.
