1971 280sl combination switch
« on: June 21, 2011, 23:36:52 »
I have recently started working on a 1971 280 sl, the problem that I am having right now is, when I turn the blinkers on it starts smoking. I am afraid the whole car is going to go up in flames, can someone shed some light on how to inspect or remove the combination switch.
thanks

I am sure the experts will weigh in on this shortly but...stop.  In the mean time I would check the fuse box to see if someone over fused the circuit.  Definitely sounds like a short otherwise but be careful and patient.

Removing the switch is relatively simple.  There is a plug under the dash just to the left of the steering column (LHD cars).  You can trace the bundle to see it run up the inside of the column.  Once that is unplugged, there are (I think) two retaining screws at the base of the lever.  I examined mine for wiring issues a few weeks ago but did not actually remove the whole assembly.  Hope this helps.
