Electronic ingnition conversion

Hello,

I have seen an add for "Hot spark " electronic conversion ignition ( 3BOS6U2L part recommended for 280 SL at 59.99 US D).

Does anybody has an experience with this conversion ?
Is it necessary to replace also the coil ?

I've never heard of this product but can recommend the '123' ignition (see other threads) - it replaces not only the points but also the entire distributor with a new one. Ignition issues are often caused not so much by the conventional points system but by wear in the distributor. With the 123 product you convert to electronic ignition as well as eliminate any potential problems caused by a worn distributor.
When I installed mine a few years ago, I noticed a marked improvement in the engine running characteristics - and this is compared against an electronic ignition conversion and a rebuilt conventional distributor.

I have a "hot spark" in my 190 SL, essentially the same as the Pertronix.  Electronic points.  If you search Pertronix on this site you will find some discussion.

Hi John--

You said that you have a Hot Spark in your 190SL.

How is it working?

I have a Pertronix in my VW type 181 as I had heard that the Hot Spark had reliability issues. No problems with the Pertronix, but twice the price of the Hot Spark.

I got my SL in the US, and found that it is easier (and a lot more cheaper) to buy classic MB parts in the US than in Europe.

You need only to be carefull with the reference of the parts, in order to be sure that you order the good one (on the internet).

In France,  SLS is well known, but you can also ask Mercedes classic through your local MB dealer (in Paris "Mercedes Lonchamps"). I have also found "Niemoller" (www.niemoller.de) in germany, but some parts are also available from general discounters like "Oscaro" or "Webdealauto".
So, get on the internet, and do your shopping !
