Autos only imported by Mercedes Benz into Australia?

Here's an interesting one - at least for me  ;D

We took the Pagoda for a day out to the classic car races at Philip Island yesterday. http://www.vhrr.com/phillip_island.htm

The car was parked on the grass overlooking the track and when we returned to settle in to a picnic there were two guys having a GOOD look at the car. We got chatting, as you do, and it turns out one was a retired MB executive and the other a retired motoring journalist. Great guys, (Chris was the journalist and Dave the exec) who even brought their own wine! You could tell that they knew the model intimately.

The journalist remembered having the use of a 230 when they first came out. He said he took it easy (on instruction) so only took it to 110mph on the Geelong road in the pouring rain! Said it was the best car he drove all year. No surprises there.

Then the exec mentioned that he remembered his boss going to the Geneva launch and came back buzzing with excitement. He also said that MB Australia only imported automatic cars and that all manuals were private imports.

Does our collective knowledge have an opinion? Certainly my car was bought through an Adelaide dealer and is an auto?
