Steering Wheel replaced, horn blows....
« on: September 26, 2011, 17:51:25 »
Hi All,

I bought a new steering wheel from MB for my 65 230SL. Switched it out with the old one and the horn blows every time I try to tighten down the center nut. I found that the rubber ring on the back of the new one was a bit elongated and there was a broken piece that was supposed to hold it in place. I exchanged it for another new one, nothing broken on this one, but the horn still blows when I tighten it down. Put the old wheel on and no horn. The wheels (old and new) look identical. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff

Fixed the problem, apparently the new steering wheels have a shorter shank on the splined area, making the horn make contact. So I just used a few washers the same size as the shank in order to get it up off of the horn contact. Problem solved. And all by myself!
