Mystery wire
« on: December 01, 2011, 21:50:50 »
In the 6+ years I have owned my 1968 280sl, the wire shown has been disconnected. I keep it capped off, but removed the tape for this picture.
The wire (green) comes out of the bundle which goes into and out of the relay shown at the right center of the picture. Judging by its length and ring tongue terminal, I would guess it is supposed to terminate near the coil, ballast or distributor. Its obviously nothing critical but I would like to make it right.

Can anybody help?

Hi, Gus,

I don't think the green wire is original to the car.
If you follow the wire to its other end, you may find a condenser there.
If you do, it belongs to the later aluminum bodied distributor.
I can see the old type cast iron distributor '051' in your picture but no condenser. Is there one on the distributor? If not, PO may have substituted the later condenser, in which case the wire would have been on the distributor terminal.
Are you still using contact points?
