Tipping the Transport Driver
« on: December 26, 2011, 06:24:27 »
Hello all,

After 2-1/2 years following this forum and searching for a pagoda I am expecting delivery tomorrow.  The car is coming across the US from the east coast to San Diego. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on tipping the driver. I couldn't find any previous threads and I have been wondering what is customary or expected.  Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.

Thanks

I can't remember if I tipped any of the drivers that delivered my cars.  Not sure if they expected it or not.  It's a nice thought on your part and as with all tipping, you should give what you feel comfortable with.  I don't think there's any protocol like restaurants or hair stylists.  Don't believe that my friend, a dealer in vintage cars, does any tipping...but, I'll ask.

After a long-distance delivery, I gave my car a thorough once-over and tipped the driver $50 in appreciation of it arriving in the same condition as it was shipped. Not sure if the two were directly related but assuming these drivers have to take alot more care than if they were moving a load of lumber or other commodity.

I had mine shipped from fl to tx and gave the driver $30 back in 2005.  Nice guy and he showed up after dinner to drop it off.  Seems like they see very little of the fee.

Follow up, my dealer friend has not tipped the many, many deliveries he's received.

Did not tip for the two cars delivered from Ohio, but it would not be out of line.

Can't wait to see the pictures, and then to see it in person!

Thanks all,

It was a husband wife team and they had been on the road 12/10 right through Christmas.  I gave them a box of holiday treats for the road and $50 to have dinner on me.  It may not have been expected but I feel deserved; after all we have all tipped waiters, gardners, etc for much less effort.  It comes down to what you feel comfortable with I guess.
