RHD 280 engine scrap?
« on: January 17, 2012, 16:55:02 »
I am hoping someone can help me determine if and engine I stumbled on has any value beyond it's scrap value. It is a 280 Fuel injection long block pulled from a RHD 66 SL. The engine had been sitting for about 10 years, but appears to be rebuildable. It appears to be a replacement engine provided by MB in the UK. I know it was pulled from a 66SL, but I don't know anything else about the history of the motor. I am tearing the engine down and trying to determine what if anything is worth saving. Since it came out of an SL I figured I would ask here.

Casting number is 130 980 22 054384. It has a tag that says "Mercedes Benz (united kingdom) ltd replacement engine 130 980 22 12085". That makes it a 2.8 straigt six, Fuel injection, RHD, Auto. The block has in raised letters 280 SE. It came with the distibutor, fuel injection and related equipment, oil filter housing, intake manifold, starter, and the water pump and housing. The engine sat for a while so the aluminum parts have some oxidation, but most of it appears to be in working order or at least rebuildable. When I pulled the head it was obvious that the head gasket blew in #3 and #6. The timing chain guide was also broken and in pieces inside the front of the engine. I am soaking #3 and #6 cylinders in penetrating fluid before removing those pistons, but do not anticipate to much damage to the cylinder walls based on what I can see.

What do you think? Is this old crap, or hard to find parts?

Correction, 280 SE in raised letters is on the head, not the block. I think that SE and the 980 in the casting number indicate that this was originally in a sedan (67-72). I am not sure what the replacement engine tag means exactly. The fact that it is from a RHD vehicle is also unusual, at least in the US. I picked this up for the cost of gas to drive and pick it up. I thought someone might want some of the parts so I saved it from the scrap yard. I am pretty sure there are no differences in the RHD and LHD long blocks besides the casting number. I am trying to avoid scraping something that someone else has been looking for.

Good Find!!  Hold on to it.  There is no way I would take that to the scrap yard.  No doubt there will be posters that will need some parts.

PM responded to

I guess the answer is that at least some of the parts are worth saving from the recycler.

I will create a thread in the for sale section with better pictures and descriptions of what I have.

Thanks!

It;s a definite keeper. These engines are getting thinner and thinner on the ground.

I have an identical engine in my car, including the 'Mercedes Replacement' tag.
Have no idea how or when it got there but it runs well.
