What is this for? Gas Tank Vent
« on: June 05, 2004, 15:25:55 »
Last week my car had to be resprayed as a golf ball hit the car from a huge height which resulted in a big dent. At the garage another ('69) 280sl was in course of respraying. It is an origanal euro (Dutch). Pagoda. Under the tank I saw a part as shown on the pictures below. I never have seen this. The little thin hose is connected to the gas tank. The owner (for 20 years) said he did not know what it is for. According to his MB garage it should be very rare and a wanted part as it is not available on the market anymore. Anyone who knows for what purpose this part is connected to the tank?

This part is called a FSVT for short. It's full name is the funnel shaped vent thing. It's mythical purpose is to creat a vaccum over the fuel tank venting sysem as you drive.

Ahh, the good old FSVT. (catchy name). Graphic66 is correct, it is part of the ventilation system for the gas tank. I believe both the ventilation tank and the FSVT itself are still available from our trusty sponsors -- and are not (very) expensive at all.

Thanks for the answers. I will tell the owner that there is no reason to install an alarm on his rare FSVT.
