Revving when shifting to 2nd
« on: January 19, 2012, 01:29:14 »
I have a 65 230 auto - and was out this morning and half way through the drive when this problem started showing itself.

WhenI took off from the lights it would be in 1st, but then as I gained speed instead of moving into 2nd it seems that it goes into neutral and just revs. If I take my foot off the accelerator it reduces revs and goes into gear. I haven't been able to fully put it through all the gears but it seems that moving between the othes is fine.

It happened intermittently and when I stopped I checked the gearbox fluid level and found it fine. I am currently at work so am not able to do too much - but thought I would see if there was a setting or linkage I could simply adjust. I have a few ideas, but am loathed to try them in case it makes things worse!   :(

Thanks in advance

Richard

Hello Richard,

Remove the small access cover under the tunnel carpet in the car. Observe that the three position solenoid on the transmission is working by watching the linkage on the tranny operate. It rests to the rear at idle centers when the accelerator is moved and goes full forward when the accelerator is pushed to the floor and rests on the kick down switch (engine off, ignition on). You may want to double check this function on a test drive with a second person.

If the linkage has gotten stiff, you may have free it up. Also any changes in engine vacuum from ignition timing etc. will also change the vacuum at the transmission and effect shifts. If you discover no issues with transmission or engine linkage and the ignition timing is ok, I would do a filter and fluid change. While the transmission pan is off, check for any debris in the pan and also check to make sure that the 10mm bolts holding the vavle body in place are all tightened to specs. Use a new cork gasket on the pan. Make sure to use the correct fluid, and drain the torque converter also.  To refill the transmission fluid, start off adding 4 qts of fluid, start the engine and move the shifter through the gears (allows fluid to fill the converter).  Begin adding more fluid. Carefully monitor the level as you add it is easy to overfill. Make sure you are on level ground with the engine at idle. When you reach the lower mark you may want to take a short drive (block or two) and then re-check and add. The fluid level will rise as the engine and trans warm up. At this point the level should be at the top mark. If you over-fill, it is easy to fill bleed some off by loosening the transmission oil line a the radiator.

Thanks Joe - I'll go through it as soon as I get a chance and keep you in the loop.
I also suspect the 'lifting magnet' (as called in the BBB), which keeps the revs up when shifting. When manually pushing in the plunger it seems very stiff to me - shouldn't it just float in and out when manually pushed and the engine off?

The timing of it was unfortunate to say the least!  :(
It happened a couple of days before I was due to go on the forum outing put together by Garry. I had to go with modern. It was a GREAT drive and get together - THANKS Garry and Kate.

Well I have finally got to the bottom of the gearbox problem - firstly it was not going into 3rd and not 2nd as in the title.

Kindly Joe got back to me and suggested a couple of adjustments that I should try. Did them all, but the gearbox got worse and eventually just wouldn't shift from 2nd at all on taking off.

I had to get it lifted on a flatbed to my man Richard who after following the 'flow' diagrams in the gearbox came up with the problem. It seems that in the governor at the very rare of the box there is a press fitted post with an oil gallery that is used only for third. This had moved in so that NO oil was getting through the gallery at all. The photo shows the post where the gallery should be.

We tried to press the post out - but with no luck. Fortunately my new best friend Richard had a spare box and was happy to replace my part with it.

Back together and all is good in the world again  :D.
