RHD 250SL with ZF 5 speed
« on: March 01, 2012, 17:59:07 »
I have just aquired (at WAY too much money) a very rare car indeed.
She's a RHD 1967 250SL with factory fitted (although I haven't yet got the data card but I'd be surprised if it was retro fitted) ZF 5 speed!
Red with mushroom tex and verifiable 74000m.
She'll need a total restoration but will be one of a very select few when finished.
Interestingly the soft top looks original as it's the thin canvass type which doesn't foul the storage bay aperture when folding.
To be honest if she wasn't a 5 speed I'd say she was a breaker but with the value of these cars going up and up I'm probably going to comit and do a bare shell restoration.
I know the parts are fetching good money but I doubt very much I'd even recover my capital costs by breaking her.
So, if anyone wants to come and leave a deposit you can decide your own spec!

Congrats on the new find!

Looking forward to seeing the pics and the restoration as it progresses!
Best of luck with it.

Colin,
James goes (out) with every colour code  - as long as it is DB906H. :D ;D :D ;)

And the interior combo doesn't matter for him either, until it is 8006, interior code 250.

So, if you decide that color combo, he is certainly in again. ;)

Best,

You should make sure that car initially came with the ZF box. If not, parting may be a more sensible approach from a professional point of view, unless someone buys the car as is and then pays you for the restoration work.

Yes, very sensible advice. I'll know more once I get the data card.

I now have the data card and am delighted to report that she does indeed have code 230, 5 speed ZF!
I've also noticed from the card that she came with a cream soft top so my assumption that the soft top was original must be wrong although it definitely is canvas and not mohair.
Original UK car too.

250, RHD, original ZF 5 speed. That makes it quite a rare car ! May be the only one ? Would be worth trying to determine that. You now need to post pictures !

Originality is also on the rise in terms of value. With 74.000 original miles, it may be worth considering servicing it and fixing all what's wrong, without necessarily restoring it. How is the interior ? and the rust ?
