What do you think - Fix Up or Not?
« on: March 29, 2012, 17:51:17 »
Hi, All. Well my wife inherited a 65 230 sl. It is missing quite a few parts and at one time had been hit hard in the front and had a poor repair. It had been sitting for 30 years and was taken apart to repaint it and over the years parts were lost or stolen. But the car has no rust that i can see but i haven't gone over it in real detail. I was wondering if it would be worth tring to put it back on the road?
Thanks, David

We'll need some pictures before we can help but it doesn't sound good.

This sounds great.  If you have some mechanical skills I am finding the Pagodas to be very easy to work on (of course its German).  This site should provide much of the resources you need.

Depending on the parts that are missing it may be worth restoring but then it may not depending on what is missing.   As a doityourself project it may not be that bad - if you have to send it to a specialist it may get out of hand pretty quick.

More information as to the condition of car would get you a better response and lots of pictures are more hopeful.

An identification of what is missing will also be crucial to your decision.

One guy I met with had a car that was sitting for many years and was picked over by thieves (probably kids) and he thought the car was worthless - he sold it and put proceeds towards a used Porsche Boxster and has never been happier.

Hi,all. Well  here's some of what i know is missing headlights, taillights, complete grill, seats and driver side door card. Oh yea the driver side out side door handle. Now for the bad stuff the car was hit hard in the front right corner and the frame rail is bent up (but has been pulled straight looks bad) inner fenders wrinkled. They changed the front clip but never finished the job right. The body work is not a problem i have fixed more damage then that. As long as i can get the parts. If i do the car it will be a driver because it would cost to much to restore. I will try and get some pics this weekend of it. What do the hinges under the converable top hook to?
Thank,David

considering what you dont have and what you have to do- you maybe better off in the open market getting a car that needs work but has something to work with.

It seems to me the best thing would be to part out what is there instead of trying to get back what's missing. You will go broke otherwise. If the parts on the car are decent, you can make some money on the inherited car.  Then, if you really want a 113, you can find one out there in driver condition and will have a down payment...

Hi, ALL and thanks, I was hoping that the excecutor would call and say he found more parts in some of the other buildings but that hasn't happened and i don't think it will. Everyone came out of the woodwork to swip stuff and alot of stuff came up missing. The excecutor can't stay there day and night and as soon as he leaves they come in and grap everything that's not bolted down. I don't think i will get rid of it. Because of where it came from. So i will probably take it apart and paint it with epoxy primer. Then build a garage for it and the 85 vw cabriolet conv. he had. You know that sentamental stuff causes you to do stuff not quite right. Maybe i could find a rust bucket for the parts i need some time when i am done with my current project. There seems to alot of parts on here for sale and alot of info too.
Thanks, David

there comes a time when the parts bin is a better consideration to be practicle. You can make money from the parts that could help you purchase a nicer one, and our cars will go up in value because there will be one less pagoda on the road. just my opinion.
