I just acquired a 280 with the ZF  5 speed and planned on having all the fluids changed including ATF in the ZF box. This seller is claiming you should never change the fluid.  I asked him why and he said fresh fluid introduces new noise and gearing break down tends to follow. This is what his mechanic says anyhow??  What are everyone's thoughts?

The fluid info sounds bogus to me. The ZF manual I have even recommends the changes. I'll need to look to see how often. As long as the fluid is changed to the recommended type I can't see how it can cause the issues he brought up. My thoughts.
On another related topic, has anyone received the new ZF 5 speed yet from the factory? I received a reply in December from ZF regarding my many inquiries on parts availability--it was a simple we'll get back to you in mid-January with a response. Nothing yet!

Fools and their money are easily parted. and there were two bidders prepared to go there ??? ???  In the past its been $3500 to $4500.

For an extra $1000 Aust they could have had a brand new ZF box, now with an overhaul or at least a full service they will be near that figure anyway.

Makes my order for a ZF look very reasonable now.

Well it may seem high but probably not from the sellers perspective.  He claims he originally paid $11,500??

There was a time when you could often get good deals on ebay. Over time, that has changed and you really need to know what you're looking for and at. I have seen some pretty outrageous asking prices and claims about parts that in all honesty look like junk. Not long ago, someone had listed a commonly used item on all early model MBs  for over $800.00 claiming it was very rare and off a 600 series. I have dozens of these items and know for a fact they are the same across the various models. Hopefully, our members are wise enough to take passes on auction items such as these. As for the ZF, I agree with Garry, for a few more nickles you can get a brand new one now w/o the hassle of having to have it rebuilt.

Well, I was the third highest bidder at $5201.00 but these other guys want it a lot more than I do.
Is there a replacement 5 speed transmission in the works for the 113 chassis or is this just a pipe dream?

Do a search on ZF and you will come up with a thread that discusses ZFs production of the ZF 5 speed replica-the S5-20. The first deliveries of these boxes is supposed to be this month. In one of my last posts, I had asked any of those who did order if they have received one yet.

For those interested in the ZF 5 speed boxes, there is a ZF 5 Speed listed on ebay for the Maserati at this URL:

 <http://www.ebay.com/itm/ZF-S5-20-5-speed-transmission-Maserati-Mistral-Sebring-Qporte-Lamborghini-XLNT-/300651921491?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item4600404053>

This box carries the same model number as the ZF S5-20 designed for the MB 113s, but a quick look at the pictures of the Maserati box will reveal the significant differences between the two different applications. Not clear why ZF gave these boxes the same model designation since the external differences are pretty stark--the Maserati box is cast aluminum while the MB box is cast iron. Still not clear how significant the internal differences are but a review of the ZF oldtimer site that lists repair parts for the S5-20 has different part numbers for several parts depending upon whether it is a MB or Maserati application

Garry,

Just curious, how responsive has ZF been to any of your inquiries regarding the replica? I sent out numerous emails to the contacts they have listed and only got a simple response from the ZF rep in France stating he'd get back to me with a full response sometime in mid-January. Their customer relations via email is pretty bad in my opinion. Hopefully, you'll get your ZF box soon. I did get one of the parts I needed through one of our members who deals with ZF in the UK, but even he had a problem getting them to respond.

Like everyone, response is slow or non existent. Have to send letters several times.

I think Naj in UK has some connection, but not sure what exactly.

Hi, Garry,

The ZF office in UK has been rather unhelpful.
As late as November 2011, they were still saying that the box was not going to be produced even after I pointed the guy to their website suggesting deliveries would start in January 2012. However, people who have ordered them have order confirmations and production and testing is going on.

On a different note, one sold on UK ebay was a giveaway at £1020.00  ???

Naj ,

That zf on the U.K. ebay auction has been listed over and over again for the last few yrs. in the U.S.A. and then in the U.K. . It's showing that it's sold but I bet it shows up again. It's very recognizable by the black paint. Buyers beware of this one !!!!

Naj/Garry,

Well sometimes wonders never cease. I finally got a reply from ZF abeit it was from their Swiss rep--I had "carpet bombed" ZF with e-mails all asking the same questions and finally got a response. As far as I can tell from the response I got, the rear speedometer cover is "extant". I had to look that word up to make sure I wasn't being told it is "extinct" lol. My resposne to this was "how much does it cost" and "how can I get one". I'm standing by waiting for that response--what a way to run a railroad!

I would be willing to bet the call for not changing the fluid in the ebay posting is due to the fact it is probably filled with gear lube or bananas to keep it quiet.

Okay--this is right from the ZF S5-20 tech manual Ref-247.

"For the lubrication of the gear box use good quality oils of viscosity groups SAE 90 (or SAE 80 or ATF oils (type A. A). Oils which may cause corrosion (rust) on steel or bronze parts or hardening of the seal rings are not suitable. Hypoid oils are not recommended since they also can cause the above mentioned damages. Change oil first after 4,000 to 5,000klm, then every 16,000 to 20,000klm. Drain oil immediately after stopping the engine, i.e. when the oil is still warm and flows out easily. Every time you change the oil, clean the magnet of the exhaust screw. In case of any leakage, immediately chekc oil level, then ceck every 5,000klm. Good quality oils come with all the necessary additives. Do not add any special additives"

It is interesting that the fluid by the manual is not restricted to ATF. At one point in my ownership of my 230SL, my ZF box was filled with SAE 90 and it was not very happy with it. Very stiff shifting and some actual grinding of gears. My box was rebuild shortly after by ZF but I never asked if this may have been the cause of any damage that they found inside. Needless to say, it has only been filled with ATF ever since.

Hi guys, i owned a 4 speed auto 230SL. Recently my gears are not shifting to the 4th, keep staying on 3rd. Will be planning a visit to the auto gear workshop soon.

Just to ask, is it possible to change the auto gear to a ZF 5 speed manual?

It is definitely possible and has been done before. If you use the search function on the forums you will find quite a few threads on the topic.

Hi franjo 66,  I tried to use the search function - it made me crazy !    As regards "and has been done before", how would (you) go about finding those threads?

Thanks, Hank
