A bit of luck I think - Linkage Repair
« on: April 26, 2012, 15:56:37 »
I am driving from UK across France to Switzerland starting on Monday 30th so I
thought I would top up with fuel. Got to the end of the road and the car spluttered and
stopped and would not start. Panic set in briefly but on raising the bonnet (hood)
discovered the ball joint nearest the CSS on the throttle linkage had unscrewed, the nut
lost and the linkage apart. So plenty of fuel but no air! Pushed the linkage together and drove back
home carefully, forunately it stayed in place put a new nut on and all is well.
I now carry nuts and bolts in my spares kit!
Better now than on a French Motorway with no spare nut!!

I've just done exactly that journey and do it two or three times per year. I assume you have Europe wide recovery? French motorways are NOT a pleasant place to break down! It's VERY expensive just to get towed off the motorway and I've heard of some extremely discourteous recovery drivers aswell.

Is this something a little duct tape would have helped until you could get a proper nut?  If you have ever seen Red Green you will know that anything can be made or fixed with a little or a lot of duct tape.  ;D :D ;)

Larry,

I think you would find a lot of spare nuts on the French motorway, and not all French :D  ;) ;D

Yes I do have European recovery but would not want to put it to the test!
Jordan I agree duct tape or a zip tie, both of which I carry but had just put
my tools spares etc under the rear parcel shelf so I can get more luggage
in the boot (trunk). To get at it would have put me in danger of the busy
traffic negotiating it's way past :-\

I must fess up I had this linkage off recently to remove the rocker cover
I did remove the 'balls' to clean things up, guess I didn't tighten them on re-assembly.
