Rear chrome trim - attached how?
« on: May 09, 2012, 09:11:12 »
Ever since a restoration in the mid-90's, the rear chrome trims have been missing from my car (the ones just behind the rear wheel arch). I've purchased a pair and plan to fit them as soon as my wheel arch lips have been resprayed. But how are they attached? I suspect that a few stainless screws are not enough...

I just re-fitted these to one of my Pagodas. They were attached with countersunk steel sheet metal screws, three each side. There was some rust forming around the holes in the fender, I cleaned and re-painted those.
Now, fearing the galvanic corrosion effect, I re-fitted my chrome trims using flat-headed countersunk M4 brass screws, through the fender and secured with a plastic washer and M4 brass nut on the inside
(The chrome trims are brass, of course)

I used stainless steel screws, and as for the holes, I have undercoating in my fenderwells.

Bought mine from a guy in Poland - www.retroteile.pl - who makes them himself - they are really good looking and of very high quality as they weigh a ton. Pretty sure they are chromed brass. They are also available at SLS, Niemöller and other European suppliers, but I don't know whether it perhaps would be easier/cheaper for you to find a local US supplier.
The strange thing is, that these pieces often are missing although they are a very important part of the cars overall line - mine looks tail-heavy without them and I can't wait to get the new ones on :-)
