My Wife bought me an Apple i-Pod Mp3 Music player as a birthday present last month. And since then I have been trying to figure out a way to use it with the Becker Europa II stereo radio in my 280SL , which is nearing the completion of its body Off restoration.
I THINK I DID IT !!A local radio specialist was able to use an auxiliary in the radio and gave me a line out from the Europa II (Two jacks like the back of a home amplifier) that I could plug the I-pod line out into. The radio goes quiet when I start the i-pod, and on again when I put the i-pod off.
Then I used an Apple car charger, that goes into a cigarette Lighter, which I installed behind the dash out of sight and connected them to an Apple i-Dock.
I had a local wood artisan make an enclosure for the dock in the same wood as the center cluster with a slit in the wood 4x2cm, where the i-pod could be placed (See Attached Photos)
I Also connected the Europa amplifier into a Sony 4 way amplifier placed under the wood panel behind the seat, which gave me 500 watts for four speakers, two in the front in their original place, and two in the back.
I did all the wiring today and tested the system, [and behold it works fantastically!
Now I can keep the original look of the dash, and have up to 10,000 songs in my SL!
Attached are the photos with i-pod in, i-pod out and a schematic of the connections.
