1966 230SL Fuel Lead Additive
« on: June 17, 2012, 02:57:07 »
Should I be using a lead substitute in the fuel for this car?  Does straight unleaded fuel pose problems?  Also, are there good tutorials or description on the mechanical fuel injection?  Most exploded views in manuals show a two piston style pump.  And I've seen indication of a dipstick on the unit, although there appears to be an oil line from the engine.  I'd just like to have a better understanding oh how it operates.
Thank!
Harry

There is a wealth of information about the questions you posed, try the search function and you should be able to get what you need.

Directly, these cars had hardened valve seats, and there is no need to do anything extra with the fuel. I believe most use the highest octane available in the area, or search out some of the really high octane stuff (100 range). Here in SoCal the highest at the usual gas stations is 91.

Thanks Jonny.  How about fuel additives to clean the injectors?  I don't know that mine need that right now but it is a new car to me and I am trying to go through it with the usual suspects.
