new rebuild cylinder head instalaiton.
« on: June 17, 2012, 23:50:36 »
hi
im not new to this site but this is my first post here. i been here since i bought the car back in 2006.  but somehow my account was not accsesbal any more, hence the new account. anyway i preciated the knowledge off this site  many times and i always  found my answers without posting anything.  but now that im putting the cylinder head back and im worried to get things wrong

Im just about to put my refurbished cylinder head back.
The cylinder head is shaved .25 mm  and changed valve guides and valve seals. thats what they told me from the machine shop that was nessesary to change, the valves and valve seats looked good.
the valves and springs will be put together at the machine shop. i will install the camshaft, and rocker arms. i will also replace the timing chain,
my questions is.
should i install the cylinder head before i  change the timing chain and follow the procedure to connect the new timing chain to the old and just get it around. ore is it more easy to do it before i put the cylinder head back? ( im scared of getting the timing wrong. my cylinder nr 1 is on tdc and it stayed there since i removed the cylinder head)
when i removed the cylinder head i removed it with the manifolds on,  but when i put it back will it be any problems to put them on after i put the cylinder head back in place?.
the distributor is pointing at nr 1. but is it any chance that i can get the fuel injection pump wrong,  i belive that is connected to the crankshaft, and i did not touch that.
i read a lot on the forum here and i preaciate the knowledge off this forum.
any advice about the cylinder head instalation and startup is greatfully aknowledeged

There is step by step help here - The fount of Pagoda-ology.   Timing, torqueing, oiling, the whole procedure, et al.

Why a new timing chain?

Hello,

I would feed the new chain in now, it is so much easier with the cylinder head out of the way. As long as the distributor rotor is pointing to the same place when you are finished,  your injection timing should remain the same. Just make sure that the special bolt is in place (the special one which holds the PS tank) since it keeps the chain from jumping out of time with the injection. After the new chain is in, set the engine at TDC again but make sure the distributor is pointing to the same place it was when you started. It can only be correct or 180 off at TDC. Install the cylinder head and cam without the valve rocker arms. Turn the engine a few revolutions checking the timing marks each time you get to TDC. Next install the rocker arms one at a time and adjust the valve clearance on each as you go along.

The manifolds can be installed  after everything is in place.

Keep asking questions.

thank you for the replys.
i got my cylinder head back today but im stlil waiting for parts from sls including the head gasket and the timing chain.  so i have to wait.
i putt the camshaft back today and its quite hard to turn wihtout any rocker arms conected, i can bearly turn it with my hands.  should it be like that?  or is the bars that hold it out off alignment.  they has not been taken off so it has been like that before to.
and im changing the timing chain because the car has 102 k miles now.

cant wait to get it back on the road now.  its summer here in Norway and is  now it should be driven  :)

by the way the car is a 280 1970.  withe with green interior and i had it since 2006 and this is the first major project im doing on it.

Make sure that the cam journals are lubricated well. Pay most attention to how hard the camshaft is when tightening down the head. After each tightening pass turn and lube it a little. When you are finished with the tightening you should still be able to turn it by hand. It may require a little force. In some cases after a head is "shaved", some cam supports may need shimmed.
