Items needed for a full service in driveway.
« on: July 31, 2012, 20:35:39 »
Hi All. First time posting.
I have a new-to-me well taken care of (rebuilt 50,000 mi ago) 1963 230SL and not sure when / if all fluids were flushed (or frankly, what "all the fluids" even ARE!). Certainly it's been a couple years. So I'd rather do all of them than guess.

So turning to this group for advice on what all the items I should pick up to do a full service in my driveway this weekend.
Feel free to use my numbers to make it easier to reference your advice. Thank you in advance!

Here's my list/questions:

1. Antifreeze flush? How much to buy (mb brand of course)
2. Should I change thermostat at same time? what temp is recommended?
3. Oil quantity and type (pacific northwest usa, mild temps, driven only in good weather)
4. 4 speed manual... is there manual transmission oil to drain (where?) and then replace (where?)? what type and how much if so?
5. manual steering, but is there any kind of steering fluid I need to drain? (where)? and replace? (where)? if so, what type and how much?
6. Brake fluid? Should be drained, bled and refilled? (again, what type, and how much?)
7. Fuel filter?
8. Any other filters?
9. Plugs: recommendation please. type and gap please.

Anything else I should do as a full service in driveway let me know. Bonus points for links that illustrate procedure or at the very least SPECIFIC location and/or tips on how to get to any of these if there are any gothcyas that is. Competent driveway mechanic here, but new to servicing this car.

Thank you so much in advance!

Good start.    Cylindrical washer on oil filter stub.  Adjust valves.  Grease ALL fittings.  Oil wiper shafts.   Sync cam and crank shafts.  Fix usual rust spots.

I suggest you get a service manual (factory or something like Haynes) which will give you all you're looking for with clear instructions on how to go about it. Then there's tons of this basic info on the site, if you're willing to use the search function and look into the tech manual. This is too basic, and at the same time too much, for most people here to want to get into typing it all out for you.
