Car Vintage?
« on: September 05, 2012, 16:55:01 »
I have just been told that the 1970 250 I recently purchased - from a somewhat shady character but, that's another story - could not actually be a 1970 because MB only made 250s up until 1968.
Does this ring true?  My auto insurer had no trouble accepting my assertion that the 250 was a 1970 model - even his computer agreed - but, give the credibility of the source of my most recent information...I am tempted to believe that I may indeed have an older car than I thought.
Any comments from the group?

Hi Rory and Welcome. 250SLs are 67/68 vintage and the 280SL was the model that superseded it. Is it a Pagoda (SL) or a saloon? If it's a saloon, others will have to chime in. If it is an SL a VIN number will tell you what you have and you can look at Tech manual section to check your number.

It IS possible that it was first registered in 1970 I suppose but knockmacool is right... stopped making the Pagoda (w113) 250SL in 1968

Sometimes cars were registered the year after they were built as they were not sold in that year. I would write to the Classic Centre in Irvine California with your ownership and VIN number and they will send you the data card copy with the orginal build information. If you can get the engine number, You can determine if it is a correct engine for that car. Often 280 engines were used a s replacements. It also could be a 280SL with a  250 Sl trunk badge on it.
Your often see cars with a 280SL trunk badge but they are 230 or 250Sl's
Does the car have hub caps or whel discs?
Post some pictures on the interior and engine compartment and members can look for items that would identify the model
