Wires under drivers side dash
« on: November 22, 2012, 16:54:50 »
I am heading under the dash to install the flexible hose for the dash vent (hose is not installed presently).  My question relates to the wires under the dash.  There is a large bracket thingy with hard bakelite connectors and what looks like a flasher relay just hanging there.  Does that monstrosity connect to anything with more than a plastic zap strap?   I can't seem to find any connector or hole where a screw would go.   Does anyone have a picture of that area?

Any hints on installing the flexible hose for the vent like soak in hot water?

Ian,
the bracket mounts with sheet metal screws to the dash as indicated by the red arrows.
There are two identical male connectors on the ends of two cables, one from the center cluster and one from the column switch. Make sure they are plugged into the correct female connector ... otherwise the electric gremlins will start dancing!  ;)

It should not be necessary to soak those corrugated plastic tubes. Usually I install the wider opening toward the front of the car first and then the smaller in the rear of the chromed cover in the dash.

Thank you, that picture tells all.  Now all I have to do is make the bracket which appears to be missing for some unknown reason  - Easy enough I assume.   I will check the connectors - I learn't many months ago not to trust anything on my car.

Thanks again.

Can you make two, please?  :o  ;)
There are actually two brackets in the assmbly, one large one that mounts to the dash and a shallow one on top of it for the connector from the center cluster. That one is necessary to make room for the screws below. My 230SL is missing the shallow one and i haven't been able to find one.

When I got under my dash at lunch and after I snipped the plastic ties and unwound the bailing wire to free the thing thing it became apparent that the bracket is actually there and it was just hiding. It doesn't apper that I need to make anything- just straighten out the bracket a bit, paint it up a bit and fasten it with a couple metal screws.

Thanks,
