280SL Auto, dies while stopping

   Ingrid, my 69 Auto Pagoda girl, is running wonderfully (love my new 3.27 rear end).    But I have this one little gripe - amazing, she's 43 years old and I only have one gripe !     When she is warmed up and we're motoring along and then must come to a stop, while the tranny is downshifting, the RPMs drop to zero and she dies just before we come to that stop (like maybe 4 mph).    The first few times it happened, I would drop her into N, fire her up (no problem there) and move on.   

Now, knowing this "dead zone" will occur, I simply put it in N just before she would die, and then come to my stop.   At that point, I can move the selector back to normal drive position (she doesn't die on me when I do that), and when it's green, off I go.    Note, both the upshifts and the downshifts feel normal.    Selecting N while stopping has become so normal for me, that I didn't treat it as an emergency.    But now I would like to address this issue, once and for all.

Is this possibly some malfunction of a "switch" that controls either fuel delivery or ignition while we're coming to a halt?     Looking forward to your thoughts.

When the car is warmed up tell us what the idle rpm speed is at idle and  in drive. Also what is the history of the problem?  Most likely you need a minor linkage adjustment or mixture adjustment. The information you supply can help us pin point the problem for you.

It could also be that your fuel filter or conduits are dirty. Also, did you search on the spark plugs side?

Hi Joe & Flyair - thanks for the responses.    While doing the rear end conversion, my tech installed new ignition wiring, plugs, connectors, condenser, rotor, points, etc.    She starts immediately, hot or cold and basically runs beautifully.    Auto shifts up or down are smooth and the kick down is perfect.    Idle RPMs in gear are around 760 and about 1100 in N or park.    

My tech hasn't hands on addressed this issue as yet but I do remember him tossing out the thought that it may be some "particular" solenoid switch that is not keeping the engine from dropping to zero RPM as I come to a stop when the engine is warm.      Of note (again) - this doesn't happen at all until the engine is warm - - and further, after it is warm, it doesn't happen each and every time I stop - weird

Here's hoping that you folks can arm me with a few thoughts prior to taking Ingrid back to his shop.

Can you elaborate a bit on your thought?    I just don't remember if the "constant speed" part was mentioned by my tech.   Really sorry to be so ......... un-hip, mechanically.   Now, if you ask me how to make a great chicken soup, I can knock your socks off

It's best to look at a few "constant speed solenoid" along with "fuel linkage" threads in the forum, you should be able to sort out your problem. Basically all the linkage rods that you see on the top of your engine should be just right in order every for fuel delivery to work right.

BDW I happen to be know in my family to make a very mean chicken soup too

Doing a search on "constant speed solenoid" turned up only your last post in my thread      Honestly, and of course I could be wrong), I don't believe it's a fuel delivery linkage issue as much as it may be the occasional failure of some component that "controls" all of this.    If you're aware of a certain post or posts that may be of help, please direct me.
