Glove box Spring

If anyone is contemplating fitting a new spring to his glove box door please be aware that the spring that is currently supplied by MB is incorrect.
The inside diameter is too small to allow the two small levers to slide over each other and the spring is too long.
When i found this out i took the parts back to my dealer and another one was ordered,this also was wrong (i know have three and they are all wrong).
A complaint was sent to MB  head office, as usual they were not interested saying that the part # was correct and that Germany said the spring dimentions were correct,no further action can be taken.
I have solved the problem by useing the spring out of the oil pressure relief valve, it does need to have a few coils cut off but this was easy with a Dremmel.
Another case of MBs rationalisation policy.

Please put your info concerning the spring in the Tech Manual.  This is great infomation to have in the Tech Manual.  This way members will know what spring will work when they are making a repair to their glove box.

do you have the original guides? How wide are they?
The length should not be a problem since the spring gets compressed to the correct length when installed.

My glove box seems to stick out -not flush with the dashboard -cant seem to get it flush

What you will find is that the screw holes through the piano hinge at the bottom of the glove box door over time through vibration sometimes go oval and thus allow the bottom of the door to move outwards and cause the misalignment.  The fix, tighten the screws on the bottom of the glovebox which may or may not work for a period of time or replace the hinge.

Unfortunately I don't know. None of the known suppliers appear to have them.  I did not try the Classic Centre.  The other way around the problem, and I did it with my 280SL was to increase the thread diameter of the screw to compensate for the larger hole. A good place to look for the stainless  screws is a yacht chandler.  Not correct but did fix the problem.

Many thanks - I have just bought a hinge from them - yahoo.

It made me reflect what a great resource this site is - a question that I asked as an afterthought to a post I made, was picked up and suddenly, out of the blue I have a supplier for the part I was searching for and its now on the way. This group has to be the best thing since they invented sliced bread!!!

BTW, ordering from the supplier was "interesting" as their ebay site is in a language totally foreign to me (Swedish?)  - I`m glad ebay has a common layout.  Of course I could make a comment about how it would be easier if it was all in English but as I now realise, after my fellow Aussie was severely dumped on for having the audacity to suggest such a thing for this site - that that would not be  appropriate.
