230sl engine block replacement

Can anyone advise whether a 230 block from an early 60's saloon 230 (carburettor)  can be used as a replacement on my 64 230sl engine? Might be a naive question. My 230sl currently has a 230 head on a 250 block.. and I have now sourced a saloon 230 block. Not sure exactly what saloon it came from.. could be a ponton and can't find out for sure.  Any advice would be very useful before I commit to buying the block. Thanks

If it's from a carbureted engine, then it won't have the stuff for the injection pump (sprocket, shaft, etc.).

Even on the injected sedan engine the bore in the 220 series is different than the 230SL.  However the sedan injected block will work with a 230SL or 250 se, sl head. This way you can use the six cylinder injection pump from  your 230SL engine. Of coarse a carbureted engine block will not work with the fuel injection.

Paul it is possible that what you have is a factory replacement 230sl block. That is what is currently in my 230sl. it has the four main crankshaft, but the exterior casting has the foundry marks of a 250se/sl engine.

As mentioned, no, since this block lacks the furnishings for injection pump

I have a genuine 230SL engine block here that I can sell. Original dia 82 mm cylinders. Serial No is 127 10 007824  See attached pic

Arh, of course.. I wasnt thinking,  I need the injection drive gear(!). The sedan 250 is clearly no good for what I want. Thanks for the offer of buying the block Hans - I'll give it some serious thought.

The block in my car is a rebuilt 7 bearing 250SE (129-980-22-009646) with an early 230SL head (127 01 0520). The engine runs very rich on idle and I cant seem to overcome it.. it idles rough and always has done. I cant improve it even after going thro the excellent linkage set-up guide and removing a shim from under the WRD and adjusting the IP idle mixture 'clicky' knob to the leanest setting. As soon as I raise the revs above idle it runs smoothly and the fuel/air mixture seems fine. I am suspicious the injection pump I have in the car is not correct for the 230SL head / 250 block combo and firstly need to verify whether my IP is a 230 or 250 type.. I'll check the forums for info on the subject. If I can sort this idle mixture problem then I can live happily with 250 block that I have.
