Power steering resevoir filter
« on: October 17, 2012, 12:14:55 »
I do not think I have the correct filter in my power steering resevoir.
Anyone have a picture and part number of the correct setup please.
Thanks

Thanks Colin but I have looked on the EPC and can only see a picture of the filter housing.
I think I may also need the plate that sits on the filter as the one I have is plate and filter all in one
but does not fit properly? I am guessing a common incorrect replacement.
Anyone supply the filter in the uk other than Mercedes? Is there a Mann part number.
Thanks

Thanks Wre but looking at the sls site as you indicated should part 57 be on top of or
under the filter, part 55, when in place in the resevoir?
I would of thought on top of the filter, but sls show it under ???

Larry,
you are right, the filter (pos. 55) lays on the bottom of the filter housing and this cover plate (pos. 57) on top of it.

Is the plate on top of the filter a tight fit in the resevoir or loose with clearance around it?
Does the plate have holes through around the centre to allow oil through?
Thanks

Hi,
the plate lays loose on top of the filter but very close to the edge. There are 4 holes in it, one in the center for the fixing screw and 3 around to let the oil run through. It's very easy to open the reservoir, just open the butterfly nut, remove the cap. There you find a spring which tightens the plate against the cap. You can remove the spring and the plate. The center screw remains very loose in the reservoir.

I just took mine apart and remember it like this:

Filter is a hard porous material and is round about 3" in diameter and maybe an 1" tall. It goes in the bottom of the reservoir. The plate with holes goes above it. The plate has a circular indent that is a little smaller than the ID of the filter. It is not a tight fit on the filter but provides a bit of centering. The plate is a close fit inside the reservior. The coil spring goes on the plate. When the cap is snugged down, the spring puts compression on the plate and hold the filter in place.

The part number I gave you is correct and it's £11.00 from MB (or me), available next day. At that price why waste time hunting one down?

Larry, I went to change my PS filter and found the same unusual filter that you had. I'll have to get the cover plate to be able to use the correct filter.
