Steering wheel Color?
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:43:35 »
I was about to repaint my steering wheel but need to pick a color. I couldn't find anything in the manual, or on the boards about what color it should be. I'm assuming the steering wheel should match the shift knob, is this correct? unfortunately my shift knob is wood so that's no help, I plan to replace it as soon as I pick a color. How can I tell if I should go with White or Black? Thanks

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but I believe the steering wheel, shift knob and the knob at the end of the parking brake were standard black (plastic) for all cars, regardless of colour of the car.  White was on option.   There were no other colours.  I don't think wood was ever an option. :(

Black was standard, yes. White steering wheel could be chosen and fitted when you put in an order for a new M-B.
There was no added cost for this option. Noted in the data card with SA 55/1

67/1 (=617) means "Special lights mandated in Italy".
Most of the codes are listed in the Technical Manual: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/OptionCodes
Looks like to you have a car that was sold in Italy, check your Body and Paint Number Plate:

Yes, just so.  55/- tells that the car was delivered from M-B production with a black steering wheel

Really a lot was documented about each car made - and all info is still kept in the factory archives...
Sometimes I tell people (keeping my face straight) "in box 68 the code number indicates what was served in the factory canteen on that day"

Perfect. Thanks for you help.
Does anyone happen to know the color code for the black? or any brands and colors of paint that would be good to use to re-paint the wheel?

My car has a white steering wheel and a black shift knob. box 55 on my data card has a -.  I don't think anyone changed the steering wheel.  Is it possible that a different box would have the info.  There are several shown with numbers in them.

from my understanding, that center cap should match the wheel color. So if the center cap is org. then the wheel should be black?

In the 40 odd years that passed, yes, some PO exchanged your steering wheel to a white one :)

Thanks,  I'll only change it if I find a nice used one.  At the price of new ones I can live with it.

Hi--

Is there a color code for the black and the white steering wheels?

For example, same as light ivory, or parchment white, or??

Thanks,

Joe

Hi--

Does anyone have a clue about color codes for black and white steering wheels and shift knobs?

For anyone who has painted a steering wheel--white or black--

Which color white or black did you use? Are you satisfoied with how the color ended up?

What type of paint did you use--Epoxy?, Enamel?, Acrylic?, Base color and Clearcoat?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Brad, I'm not so sure your steering wheel was replaced. My 1967 230 is a U.S. spec car that also has a white steering wheel and a black auto shift knob. We bought the car in 1970 from the original owner, and it is doubtful he would have had any reason to change the steering wheel.  That said, my mechanic here in the Netherlands says most W113s have matching steering wheels and shift knobs.

Does anyone have a dark exterior coloured car with cognac interior and an ivory steering wheel. I am tempted to go that way and would like to see a photo please.

Hello Jack,
are you saying that you plan to acquire a white steering wheel? Let me know how or where. I like them, too.

I don't believe that original steering wheels were "painted" but a solid material with color throughout; but I would guess like anything, they could be painted or refinished of done correctly for the material they are made from. Now 47 years old, I would describe the color as 'Piano Key Ivory"
