Engine oil smells like gasoline
« on: April 02, 2013, 19:09:03 »
Hi guys, I need your help again.
For a while I noticed that the engine oil smells like gasoline and its density is lower than normal, what could be happening?
We have reviewed the following:
1. The cold start valve system is defective because the valve seat does not seal well and passes gas despite being closed. This was already fixed.
2. I understand that my IP (230SL 1964 R11 early version) works with no return to the engine oil so I think that would not pollute.
3. I read a post by Dr Benz showing that gasoline can contaminate the engine oil in cases where cylinder wear is severe.
I'm a little confused because I think my mechanic is looking liable for any side and perhaps the real reason is as stated by Dr Benz.
I thank you for your help,
Dino.

Hi Dino,

I had a similar smell in my oil too, took me a long time to figure out but in my case it needed a fine tuning with the timing, proper linkage, right plugs, good wire and coil
and also made sure the injectors were not leaking. after all this no more smell or contamination in the engine oil.

Hope this helps!
