Identifying instrument cable.

I have a 66 230SL that I restored back in 1975.  Removed the dash components and refinished the wood.  Rebuilt engine, repainted the car and installed new leather upholstery.  (I was only 38 then)  After 38 years, it needs attention again.  Speedometer was getting noisy so I decided to lubricate the cable.  Unfortunately, I don't remember what I did back in 1975.  After removing the glove box and radio, I found I still couldn't remove the speedometer.  So I joined the Pagoda SL Group and found my way to the back of the speedometer through the Tach access.  Speedometer is now quiet and I am starting to put things back together.  Problem is I have a loose cable that I can't identify.  It is a brown, two wire, insulated electrical cable that runs from the upper left heater/fan lever (blue symbol).  It is about 3 feet long and terminates in a 2-pin male connector.  My guess is that it connects to a rheostat in the lever and probably connects to the fan motor.  It may have been left disconnected in 1975.  My problem is where does it go and how do I reconnect it.  Appreciate any advice.

Interesting background on why I restored a 9 year old 230SL.  I am third owner. First owner blew a head gasket and locked up engine.  Dealer replaced head gasket and knocked engine loose.  Second owner and I drove car for nearly 7 years on four of six cylinders (two cylinders had virtually no compression - and no rings).  Car was a little slow on acceleration, but would still red-line.  The worst piston is now resting on my desk.

I presume you've looked at these:

Wiring diagram (Full members only)
Legend

The only brown wires there are in the area 3 (Glove box), 5 (Heater blower), 6 (Clock). Are any of these not functioning? Are you sure it might not be an add-on wire for an accessory since removed? Is the 2-pin male connector an official Mercedes Benz connector (like these?)

Perhaps you could post a photo!

I have attached a picture.  It is most likely the heater fan cable.  I need to find out where it goes and how to connect it.  I suspect it has been disconnected for nearly 40 years.  It was always cold driving the car in Idaho and Montana. Excuse me for being new and learning how to operate the network.

Yep, but this way we'll get there... If I look here at the SLS site, item nr 30 is the heater blower, and it appears to have a two-prong connector -- but I can't tell for sure. The switch on the dashboard that controls the fan is a different part, shown on this page. It is item 23/24. From looking at it, it appears to have 3 or 4 prongs. So that would mean the cable does not belong to the heater fan switch.

Can you trace the cable to the other end? The Heater-Blower motor (nr 12 in the wiring diagram) does indeed only take two wires.

This looks like a connector for a speaker. Take a look at your radio back and see if there is a mating connector for this.

The cable originates at the heater control and must go to the fan but I don't see where it enters the duct system to get to the fan.  I have just cleared everything out of the way and will start to disassemble the heater ducting.  I welcome any advice.

Could it be the speaker connection cable? I can see a + sign on the plug

Yes for sure a speaker connector. For a Becker radio it is.  The Blaupunkt connectors are a bit different.
