Graham Hill at Snetterton in a 230SL/600 Grosser
« on: May 06, 2013, 20:21:30 »
Heres something for the archive - a recording of Ex F1 driver Graham Hill driving around Snetterton racetrack in a 230sl (and, incidentally, a 600 Grosser).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-230SL-Pagoda-600-Grosser-Promo-45RPM-record-Graham-Hill-at-Snetterton-/121106128367?pt=UK_CarParts_Vehicles_Manuals_Litterature_ET&hash=item1c327cddef

I wonder how well one could make out those clipped tones over the howl of the engine at 5000 revs.  Any oldtimers out there who still have a record player?

Oisin,

Why settle for just one car sound?  I found this a while ago: http://www.eautomobilia.com/product/00/08REC95025/Mercedes-Benz-Sound-Pictorial-History
Quite a bit more engine noises...is this what enthusiasts were interested in some years ago?  Thought it was quaint (Like New! Barely Used!) but have yet to bother to plug in an old turntable to listen to it... :D

Hello all,

quite a few years ago I put together a slide show presentation for our local Mercedes Benz club based around this record.

So I have decided to post it on Youtube for a limited time for the people who have not heard it or do not have a record player.

BTW this is not a "listed to engine sounds" type of recording.

I hope you enjoy it.

Fabulous - thanks Paul - as the man said "most enjoyable".  Oh to have a brand new engine and take it to 6000 revs.  He was a bit of a legend really wasn't he- like a cross between Dick Dastardly and Terry Thomas :D

Love it.

Both cars sound fun to drive:   4 sp vs automatic    Same hairpin...

230SL  -  .... doing 5,000 rpm in top gear which represents 100 mph, braking hard for the hairpin at 300 yards,  changing down to 3rd gear, throw the car into the corner for a bit of a drift  ...hold the car nicely balanced through the corner on the way to the next straight....

600 - ...100 MPH at 3,600 revs, ........braking braking for the hairpin at 110 mph - down to ......40 throw car into the corner, set down and accelerate out....   little bit of accelerator control , slight correction and accelerate away.

All of them are Fantastic pieces documenting the hey-days of motiring. I immensely enjoyed watching them.

Many thanks for sharing

By the way, if such circuit were accessible nowadays, I think that setting a meeting place for gathering our Pagodas (and other cars obviously) would be no brainer.
