Motor mounts.
« on: August 23, 2013, 18:40:48 »
I just finished changing the drivers side motor mount.  It was difficult to get at the lower allen bolt.  I also had to raise the engine about 2 inches to get the old mount out.  The passenger side looks tighter to reach.  Is there an easy way to get the mount out?  I don't think the right side of the motor can be raised as high because of the exhaust.

Not sure about easy method (is anything ever, really easy on the Pagoda??) In any case, when I changed the ones on the 280 SL, the driver side was the one that cause me the most grief, as in tight confines, etc. For the passenger side, it was actually pretty easy. Having some long extensions to reach the allen bolts is probably the biggest factor. I was able to reach it all. I did put a hydraulic jack under the engine, and lifted it just enough to let the mount slide out. You definitely do not want to put too much stress on the exhaust or the headers. This was about a year ago, so I don't remember any other details.

The shim with the bushing on the bottom caused a lot of trouble on the drivers side.  Are you saying the other side will lift high enough to get the shim and bushing out while still attached to the mount?

Ok,  The right side was easier despite of the manifold.  All done.  Here are some pictures.  The right mount was separated.

I still have a clunk in the drive train somewhere.  I think it may be in the rear axle center mount in the trunk.  I bought a new one and will change that next.  It looks easier than the motor mounts.  More to come on that later...

I had mine changed many years ago, and from what I understand it is a relatively easy fix. I think there is a lot about it on the forum.
