My beloved

bought for me an AMG experience at Brooklands (with passenger laps in an old Gullwing thrown in) which I did today

The technology is phenomenal. A 2.1 litre twin turbo AMG A class with something stupid like 350bhp through all 4 wheels. Under 5 seconds to 60 and stops on a sixpence. Stops on a 50p piece on their wet slidey road. Stops going round corners. In the wet or dry. Goes round corners on rails. 90mph on their little straight

Same of the 500plus BHP black series C class and the SLS - albeit with no 4 wheel drive. The black C can be easily specced to be 1500kg - with airbags etc - and have over 500 bhp.

yada yada. I came away (feeling nauseous!) sort of wondering why... Amazing technology driving the car - in some cases quite literally taking over - adding safety that a mere human cannot provide. Yet it's almost as if the tech is needed because of the power: I'd guess pretty much everyone who buys one will leave it in comfort mode and drive it with all the driver aids on and sit on the motorway at 85mph or be stuck behind a Tesco lorry like the rest of us on an A road. And yes, they make the best noise ever!

My passenger laps in the old SL were amazing  which got to 65 easily enough - which reinforced to me that..

It's not how fast you go but how you go fast.
Or at my age, just how you go!

There are race cars and race tracks with which to enjoy driving fast and there are nice cars and nice roads with which to enjoy a nice drive. Never the twain shall meet.

and there are very twisty tracks and fast cars that leave you feeling nauseous! ;D
Perhaps I should try Silverstone or Spa next time ;)

I did amg school here in the US twice- Once at Pocono and the second time (level2) at Lime Rock.  Having open time with a professional teacher was invaluable.  I did many laps with Al Uncer III and also a few with Tommy Kendall and realized I do 10 % of what those cars are capable of.  When the day of over I felt I needed to light up a cigarette - and I dont smoke.
