lost my fuel filler cap :(
« on: October 11, 2013, 13:43:21 »
Would you believe that after a six month respray and engine detail project on my car, on the first drive the petrol cap must have fallen off.

I am so upset and hold the garage responsible as they did not install it properly after the work was completed. But I do so much work with them and life is too short...so I am trying to order a new one from classic center - only issue is that I have a single key that operates all the locks on the car.  I was so proud that I have the original key and all locks remain coded. So they are trying to source a matching one but don't hold too much hope as MB in Germany are becoming increasingly difficult for supplying matching key fuel caps :(

I now need to check what else they didn't put back properly!!!

A good locksmith should be able to re-key the new cap so as to work with the old key.  I think there are some photos and instructions on this website on the proper way to dis-assemble the cap. Once the tumbler assembly is out, re-keying it to the old key is fairly basic.

Sorry about your lost cap.  I leaned the hard way that the locking cap must be turned (forced) all the way to the clockwise stop else it can drop off...

Here are some lost cap stories...includes my story with a happy ending.

You will never find it, as I understand it he let it at home. :)

gerster, take my word for it, Dan left it at home. I think we arrived just about when he was checking the level and he forgot to put it back on. His wife tried to contact him all day on our drive down to Charleston (cell phone service sometimes sucks). The good par was there was one new one waiting for him in Charleston at the hotel ... so all ended well.
