Barn find 230 sl
« on: August 02, 2013, 19:01:46 »
I just found a 230 sl and am looking at buying it. It's buried under a tarp and a ton of stuff. I can't get to the drivers door to check the vin #. I got in the passenger door and popped the hood. It still has the 230 engine as I coudn't find the casting on the block. I got some numbers off the plate by the relays on the driver's side: they are: 113 042 10. Also more numbers: 670 140 and a very faint H6. next set: 00615 05862. The trans is a 4 speed, clutch pedal is on the floor, something unhooked. Really dusty and dirty under yhood, early style pump with oil fill cap. The locks are still on the injection nuts on the FIP. Power steering, everything is there. A bit off bubbling on the cowl at the sindshield. under body look sold , lots of undercoating, hard to check as it's in a tight spot. It's had body work and paint years ago. Body is straight. I'm thinking of buying it and parting it out. Soft top is shot, someone bent a piece of the dash getting to the lock on the steering lock.Piece of metal between the instrument cluster and the glove box. Radio missing. Otherwise everything is there, all the trim bumpers excellent. It's had body work years ago by the looks of things, a bit of bubbling on the rear fender edges. Jacking points look solid. I'm going to get the full vin as the guy said he sill move it to get to the driver's door. He thinks it's a 65 but he just found it in an underground parking lot. No papework but will have to run it through DOT registry. Will take a while. Would like any info on the numbers I got so far. Thanks, Carey

Consult the technical manual.
The numbers on the paint plate are described here: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/BodyandPaintNumberPlate

I think most here would prefer you sell it to someone who'll restore it, rather than parting it. That would be much less work for you too.

I agree with Dave, by your general description, it sounds like a car that could be easily restored and not a parting out candidate.  The more interesting question is what would someone be willing to pay to buy to restore and then look at what you can get it for.  There are always buyers for good unrestored barn finds.

Hi Carey,
it's been a couple months. Any news? Did you dig the car out?

Sounds like a diamond in the ruff. You do not fine  many Pagoda SL:s in the Barn. Lucky you did.
So take advantage while you can and  move quickly. questions can be asked later!
