How many is too many?
« on: November 30, 2013, 22:59:19 »
Hi All.

I had some fun yesterday posing with my cars for a photo shoot. My 300TD is not included because it is up in the Puget Sound area.

Needless to say,  my spouse is having some difficulty understanding with this - -

Larry in CA

No worries Larry, I know someone that has three houses (2 in Canada and one in SCal) he has 7 cars and believe it or not a garage spot for each of them :)

As for me once I had 3 for a while it created a traffic jam in my drive way LOL … now I'm down to 2 something new and something old :)

That is a danger - there are so many cars that I'd like to have. So what you do see with some who have the means is that they amass large collections: 50-100 or more cars. People like Jay Leno, Ralph Lauren, etc. Although it's rare to see a collector stick to one marque, there is a Dutch collector who has something like 50 Mercedes.
I'm nothing special but also find myself having 4 motorcycles and 4 cars (two for daily transport and 2 classic). The problem with having many cars is driving each one enough.

Cees,

The topic of too many cars for driving them enough also came as a topic we discussed with friends here. This is especially true in the climates like ours where the season is always too short for our liking.

There is the thrilling period of restoration, which - if successful - is creative and rewarding, despite draining our wallets. Then the naked truth appears: no sufficient time to enjoy the fruit of our efforts.

Nevertheless, such a select collection as the one rassambled by Larry looks fantastic. Congratulations :)

My wife asked me recently why would I need another one, having recently acquiring a 380sl along with my Pagoda Hmm.   Why not,  Not everybody gets it  but if I had a shed and the $  I'd have plenty more variety!

As you can see from this quotation, wives should be prudent in asking why we need another one.... I mean another car  ;D

Pagoda likes good company though

Never too many.  Many on my dream list, not enough storage or $  which slows you down

There were a couple articles by (I think) Peter Egan where the discussion of what is the "right" number and I think it was something like 7 motorcycles and / or 5 car/trucks.  Depending on the type / content / specialization of a small driving collection, the vehicles seemed to find themselves into the following broad categories.   2 everyday drivers, 1 project, 1 weekend driver/show and shine toy and 1 utility hack.

Trailer queens are not included as they don't get driven.  You can have as many of those as space and $$ permits and they don't count towards the "magic 5".

PS  I subscribe to the modified 7 motorcycle rule and it seems to work - my wife doesn't get it either..

Speaking of another woman … I find now that I am retired my wife is indeed another woman … some of you out there know what I mean … the younger ones among you will find that out once you are retired and together 24/7 :)

So take good care of your Pagoda … one day if not now you need it more then you think as a escape code  ;D

Our house has

Pagoda
964
Hairdressers Range Rover
Smartie
and the old C class

and 2 vespas
and an assortment of bikes

Speaking of which, the velominati have some up with a formula of the number bikes one should own

N+1 <= S-1
where N is the current number of bikes owned and S is the number of bikes at which point the spouse gets seriously irate

(anyone want to buy a 1995 C280)

I have a modern daily car, a 230 sl, a BMW 1200 GS motorbike, 2 mountainbikes (that is really great !!!) and a racing Colango bicycle.

I feel I still miss: a Jaguar E- type coupe, a Toyota HiLux and a Vespa.

I will try to solve that next year.

1956 Dodge Deluxe V-8 Long Bed Pickup
1966 MGB-GT

Two Mercedes here 1967 250SL and the E500, my problem extends to having multiple motorcycles and fishing boats.  In Florida you pay for the registration taxes on your birthday.  Every birthday reminds me I have too many "toys" when I go through all of the registrations (truck, 2 cars, 2 motos, 2 boats 2 trailers they even get me for a canoe because I have an engine on it).

All I really need is my work truck, Street legal dirt-bike, my 250SL and multiple surfboards to keep me happy...boats, better to have a friend with a boat than to own one!  The E500 is nice when I need more than two seats.
