I have a screaming tacho. It comes in over 3000 rev/min app. I changed the cable: it is better, but still appears sometimes.

So for a winter project I wanted to have it refurbished. Today I took it out of the car. The plan was to send it in for restoration. But,

Could not resist to open it. (I am a mechanical engineer and had a machine construction company for over 25 years).

There is radial play (bushing diameter) and some axial (along the length).

Should adjusting the axial play (with the small screw) will already take away the screaming. Ort new bush for axle is needed?

Anyone had success with taking awy only axial play?

I'm sure that your engineering intellect is satisfied, but I just sent my tach off the Austin TX to be repaired of the same problem, with an estimate of $75 plus freight.

Can't help you on the internal components, though, and I'm sure the international freight would be prohibitive , but I'm sure there are similar Tach/Speedo shops on your side of the pond.

You may also refurb your speedo at the same time, since you have the dash apart.  The "speedo bounce" issue at low speed is a common gear problem.  $100-$125 to refurb.

PS. don't forget the LED bulbs.

Speedo bounce is often just needing a tightening of the castle nut on the gear box end of the cable to fix.  Cannot answer the other question, pulled a speedo apart once, still in parts, don’t ask.

Step one: wash off all of the grease.
Step two: lubricate shaft and bushing with light oil. (ATF works well)
Step three adust the end thrust. no end shake, but turns freely.

I have'nt seen a tach so worn that it needed new bushings, but these cars are 30 years older now than when I worked on them.
