Over the years of ownership I've become more a fan of originality and the clean, simple lines of the Pagoda... but somehow I still like (and keep) the stripe on mine!

Hi Craig
Beautiful car and great color combination. Pin stripe fits very well with that combination. Lake Washington in the Background? Hope the fog lifts so you might get a ride in this weekend :)

Thanks John!  You're right... Carillon Point in Kirkland, on Lake Washington. It is foggy and cold! Last weekend was beautiful though... so of course went for a ride!

Craig - Thanks for posting the two side-view pictues showing the stripe, which is subtle but nice.  I saved these pictures so that when I get the two rear fender strips I can get get them lined up properly.  Nice car that you have by the way and I like the black on the top.

Fritz...

Two points...

1) Call SLS if you want to work with them...when they pick up the phone and you say "Hello", they will carry on the balance of the conversation in English. If you want to just puruse their site, click on the Britsh flag and almost everything comes up in English.

2) On the Chrome wheel opening moldings, while not one to challenge your wife (challenging my own is enough for me thanks) wasn't she the one who asked you if pinstripes came from the factory? Chrome arches would truly make your original countrymen shudder! Again speaking of originality over personal preference leave these off. If you cant live without them add them later.

Fritz,
If this may help, have a look at the SLS website: in the upper right section there are 2 icons allowing to switch between German and English. No need to master Goethe's language to buy from them :)

Alternatively, as Eric suggested, have a look at the link:

We cleaned the underside of the hood and deck lid to bare metal and repainted it in a satin black.

I understand from this thread as well as others that you are very interested in knowing what is original from the factory.
I just want to point out, that if you painted the underside of the hood/bonnet in satin black, that would not be original.
It should be body color. And, from the factory, there were paint runs typically. You can search the site to find pictures of this.
Also, for the underside of the trunk, I believe it should be a dark grey ... but the jury might be out on that one still.  :D ;D :D  Of course, this is a very very minor point.

I know you know this ... but your wife didn't want the pin stripes because they weren't original .... use that logic on the wheel well chrome too !!
If you want another opinion, I would take the pin stripes long before the wheel well chrome.

How fantastic it must be to have a museum and even better, a restoration shop. I hope to visit someday.

I just talked to my body man/painter by phone and he informed me that he prepared the car prior to painting without preparing the fender edges, as did not know at the time that the chrome arches were not original.  The car has already been painted and clear coated once, sanded betwen and again painted and clear coated again today, so we are out of luck on the arches, but no pin stripe.  My wife liked the arches anyhow, so there is no need now to spend time urging her to have them left off.

I know that most everyone on this forum will be disappointed, as I am, but to fix this now would involve another week of work, as would have to wait for drying time, then resand the car, rework the fender edges, order in more paint and clear coat, and then repaint it in silver and then more clear coats.  While we have a full-time shop, we have over 35 cars and have other pressing issues with some of the other cars, so cannot possibly waste any more time with this (sorry).   I guess I should have found this forum a month earlier to avoid this.  I have seen pictures of the chrome arches on a red 280 and in my opinion they looked terrible.   However on silver they blend in better, so am in hopes that we are OK. The car is not being judged anyhow, but we normally like to stay original as much as possible on  most of our cars.  My son has some modified muscle cars that are not original (wheels especially) and it does not matter for that type of car.

For Achim - I guess you have already figured out that Americans can screw up sometimes!   Either way, I still appreciate the feedback and suggestions and wish I had known about this a few weeks ago.

For others - I will be posting pictures in a couple of weeks of the car when finished and reassembled.  Arches or not, the paint job should be spectacular, if it comes out as good as most of ours in the past.

Fritz,

Sounds like the wheel arches will be a definite. While they are not original, I am certain all of us here are so pleased that another 113 is being improved upon so caringly.

Enjoy!

I guess you and my wife are the only ones that like these.  Thanks for the support on this.

My friend and neighbor owns a moss green 280 SL with chrome wheel opening moldings...I asked him about them not being original...he 1) didn't know they weren't and 2) doesn't care that they're not and 3) loves the car as is and enjoys the heck out of it!

Alfred,

I have seen numerous pictures of the Company provided photo of the Mercedes 230SL you included in your response but I have never seen a real one in that particular green color.  Does anyone know what DB color that car is?  Nothing I have seen on the website or anywhere else comes close to it.

In looking at this thread tonight, I notice that I promised to post pictures of my wife's 1968 280SL without pin striping, but with the "non-original" wheel arches, so here are 3 pictures.  I said I would post the pictures in a  "couple of weeks". That was in January of 2013, so I am about a year late!

Even with the arches, this car received a 2nd place trophy this past August in the import division of our largest local show in Boardman, Ohio. * 1st place went to a fully restored red Ferrari and there were 2 or 3 other Pagoda convertibles in the judging, along with about 20-25 others.  This car was painted in our restoration shop at TP Tools in Canfield, Ohio and is on display in our car museum in Canfield, Ohio.  See www.tipcars.us for information and more pictures.  This car is enjoyed by many who visit our car museum and is always one of the favorites.
