Hello everyone,

My 280sl is scheduled to be delivered on Sunday so of course I am/was excited to get it out on the road. I have read most of the recent posts about insurance. Thinking it would take several days to get classic insurance I called my GEICO to see if I could at it to me regular policy for a few days. GEICO is associated with American Collectors insurance and connected me to them. The helpful sales rep explained they are not as concerned about mileage, rather the reason for your trip. Apparently if you are driving to a destination for any purpose other than a car event the claim would not be covered. You are covered for a pleasure drive, as long as you didn't have a destination or other purpose for the trip. I could not even take it out to dinner or to my boat on a beautiful day. He said all of their competitors are pretty much the same. Hagerty did not tell me that when I talked to them, but I am concerned that will be in the fine print when I am two days in the application process.

Can anyone give some insight/experience with this issue?

Thanks
John K

    • Best Pagoda Site second to none!
I think you find all your anwsers on there web site, perhaps the Hagerty salesman you talked to was not aware of your needs. I think you can tell them how many miles you expect to drive the car yearley and the cost of the policy will be accordingly. In my case it is 5,000 Miles/year (that I do not expect to drive). My neighbour has a 1996 Jaguar also insured with Hagerty and he has unlimited milage.

You will note on there web site that "***Occasional pleasure use does not mean use for daily driving to and from work or school, routine shopping, etc."

Thanks! The agent also suggested I read the fine print to make sure the car is covered if it is hit while I am not in it, as some policies have that exclusion.

Collector car insurance can be a problem if the Pagoda is the only car you own or if you own only Collector cars. My only car is the 280SL. The insurance is "secondary" in that the Collector coverage is for what the regular auto insurance policy does not cover. If you do not own an insured "regular" car, cannot get Collector coverage.

I have dealt with USAA here in the states for many years. They cannot give me Collector car insurance but they do give a low mileage discount...the 5,000 annual miles can be to any place for any purpose except there are rally and race restrictions because of the increased chance for damage to the car.

I am a bit in a similar case. We live in DC and we go to work with the metro. We have all kind of shops around so we do not need to drive to them. As a result my '62 Coupe has been the only car we had for a while. Then my wife bought a modern car and I got the SL. So we have one modern car and two classics. Classic car insurances would only cover the classics if there are as many modern cars as drivers licenses in the household (2 in our case). This would have me buy a modern car that I don't need. As a result both my classics are insured as normal cars. For a while I had an agreed value on them in case of damage or loss, but from my last conversation with my State Farm insurer it seems they have changed it since they now also have a classic car insurance system. So agreed value would work with the classic car insurance system but I can't get it. Normal insurance would cover the car by the book value, whatever that is, and I guess it won't be much for a 62 and a 71 car. As a result I'm looking for an insurance that would whether accept to cover my cars as classics while we have only one modern car in the household, or as normal cars but with an agreed value in case of damage or loss. If anybody is aware of one, please let me know.

Hi guys,

I also evaluated the collector vehicle coverages from Hagerty, as well as Allstate.  They are, in fact, Stated Value policies, but are secondary to a "standard policy" and are restrictive in mileage and for driving to "events" or maintaining the vehicle.

I drive my 280SL all over.  Last year about 9,000 miles.  I simply added it to my main auto policy with Allstate, and with $2m of liability, and a $250 collision deductible and $0 comp deductible, I pay about $275 per 6 months.  I still have a 20 year old driver on the policy, or it would be less.

The policy pays "actual cash value" in the event of a total loss, which is approximated by the private sale transaction value of the NADA book.  I have spent a ton of time with the home office people at Allstate in claims, and they told me that that is the first place that they would go.  If the car is worth $45-55k there, they will then look to validate condition.  They urged me to get an appraisal (about $200-300) with pictures, and that would be the primary source for their adjusters.  At that value, they would most likely not total the vehicle anyway, but would source parts from the internet and ebay to repair the vehicle.  If I do total the vehicle at that value, I would probably be looking at significant bodily injury anyway, which would make the Benz the least of my trouble.

I do have direct experience with the claims adjusters, with a front fender "bender" last summer, and they paid me for a new front fender, rubber guards, mounts, and a headlight door.  There was no body damage.  I thought the adjuster was enthusiastic with the car, and worked with me to ok the best source for parts.  I thought the check was fair, and it was based on replacement parts costs for the car and labor (which since there was no body work, I could do cheaply), as I would define them (not OEM).

I would suggest calling your insurance company claims departments directly and talk to a "claims advocate", not the folks who answer the phone.  Or talk to Allstate.

I had classic car insurance on several cars for years.  It did not allow you specifically to drive the car to your job.  Now I have State Farm and it lets you drive anywhere, has a mileage cap, etc.  Cost more but not that much more.  Based on miles, etc.

These are all great points. I am going to call Alstate and State Farm now. I decided to go with Hagerty over the weekend until they just told me they would not allow my 24 year old son to drive it because of a recent speeding ticket. Gieco said they would add it to my current policy for $200 a year which would cover all drivers, but they specifically would not tell me how they would determine cash value. I am concerned that they would reduce it to a $3,000 valuation and there would be no collision coverage. What fun is the car at all if my son who is so excited about it can't drive it until he turns 26?

I work out with someone who is a state farm rep. He has my boat coverage and it was about 50% higher than my previous coverage. I am sure he will help me on this, but am concerned he will want my five other case and I will end up paying several thousand more. Scoot, how competitive has State Farm been for you compared to GEICO and the others?

I haven't compared State Farm recently with other providers.  I know that they want pictures and that the rate is determined by the declared value of the car, so as long as you have a realistic value and realistic pictures and nothing sounds wonky, you should be well covered.  I assume State Farm is more expensive than the "classic only" companies, and I assume that the coverage is superior.

With many comnpanies out there - it is hard to choose.

I have used Hagerty for years and found them to be more than far.

There is a 170+ post at another site which I have found to be excellent read. It is worth looking at.
