Newbie Needing Help...
« on: April 03, 2014, 20:10:45 »
Hi there,

Just acquired a 1966 230 SL of which I will be uploading pictures of soon enough.

My first question is this. I wanted to know if I provided the vin/chassis number if someone could tell me stuff such as -

Build date
Original colour
Specification
Engine number

Any help would be mostly appreciated and as previously mentioned will do a thread on the progress of the restoration of the vehicle.

CHASSIS NUMBER IS - 113042100001067

Thanks In Advance

Joe Shaw

Joe,

The VIN wont tell you the engine number or original color. For what it CAN tell you check out:

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/VIN for basic specifications

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/USModelYear for build month

For the original engine number and also for all options you'll need a data card:

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/DataCards

There should be a Body and Paint number plate in the engine bay that is described here:

 http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/BodyandPaintNumberPlate

Good Luck and keep us posted!!!

Thanks a lot KevinC!!

Looking at my chassis number is it a 1964 or a 1966?

Any help would be appreciated.

Will check specification etc when I'm home. Also, I was told the 230 came in two versions of manual gearbox - a 4 speed and a 5 speed?

If that's correct, which one is the rarer of the 2? I've tried changing gears in mine (currently not running) and I can't work out which it may be....

Thanks Again...

042 = 230SL
1     = left-hand drive

5 speed a little rarer I think, keep your fingers crossed and look for the extra one!
