Bench seat option indeed a USA option
« on: April 18, 2004, 17:52:43 »

I had the opportunity this Sunday to judge a Mercedes Benz class of automobiles that had five W113s two 600 one a presidental Lanudalet that was the president of Mexice and a 250C. One of the 1970 280SLs in my class was a california coupe, so I inquired if this was a delivered USA car it turns out the car was purchased new from down town LA motors in January 21, 1971 113044120200461 is a USA bench seat option 280SL for the states.

I also think I got 3 new members all who came to the show to learn about their cars and found me. Life opens many doors two of the W113s in my class got a second and third place. The 600 Landalet got first.

Here's an example of a really nice Coupe on ebay that's clearly a US-spec car:

Regarding the US California coupe, Pete Lesler is on the quest to find one made for the USA Market, I'm sure he'd like the information from the id plate in the engine bay.

As for the bench seat, I'd love to see a picture!

I have a restored silver 69 California Coupe for sale. Bought a white 280SL for our wedding photography business so I'm selling this one. I've added the Mercedes alloys and the original wheels and unpainted hubcaps are included. For photos showing bench seat and alloys click on: http://24.56.70.142/~zanone/sl/sl_index.html
Email info@zanone.com for info and more photos.

I have seen four to six of these with one being a stick and all were in very nice condition.  I know that Gernold  www.sltechw113.com has the necessary parts to convert these into a roadster.

Regarding the US delivered California Coupe.  Have you seen the data plate? Does it have 491 code on it which means US delivery?

Why the hell would anyone want a 113 with no soft top? You couldn't stray too far from shelter without a credible weather report. I just don't see any cachet in these cars. And, to go to the trouble and expense of buying one and then fitting a soft top makes no sense to me. Just buy one with the soft top to start with.
On the other hand, if you're stocking a museum of automotive oddities....
Just my opinion.

Hey Joe,

I agree about the weather reports.

My car was originally bought by a man for his daughter. He thought that his daughter would never drive the car with the soft top down so he never ordered one.
He did buy the car with a hard top.

I drive the car regularly for months during our winter without the hard top because of our beautiful clear blue skies and warm 22C days, with no hint of rain.

Our summer is a different story... hot, humid, 32C days. Definitely hard top On weather.
