Speedometer Cable on ZF 5 Speed
« on: August 22, 2004, 11:29:38 »
This one is for those who have the ZF S5-20 5 speed. Got under my car yesterday to check out the leak I have coming from the speedometer cable attachment point on the ZF and was able to get a good look at where the pinch joint fractured from overtigthening the pinch joint bolt. I'm putting in a new cable. Looks like the fracture is well below the slotted drive for the cable and I'm confident that a repair is not going to be too big a deal. I have the seal and it looks like it can be placed fairly easily. What has become obvious though is that the drive nub on the speedo cable bottoms out on the slotted drive before it is fully "home" in the pinch joint "tube" and won't allow the retaing bolt to ride through the ident on the end of the speedometer cable. I think I can make this work by slightly shortening the cable drive nub by grinding it back with a Dremel tool, but it brings up a good point. Was there a different cable for the S5-20 or could I have by chance picked up a cable for an automatic transmission. Unfortunately, I have misplaced the original cable and can not find it to do a one to one comparison. Anyone with pictures of the ends of the automatic and standard cable?? Thanks, guys.

It's the same cable. This trans was specialy designed to to mate up with a 113. One of the most difficult parts to find is a bell housing if it's not with the trans. They were made in small numbers by sand casting and were made only for this application.

Dan,

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if there is any big difference between the speedometer cable for the A/T and the M/T--primarily the end that mates with the box itself? I'm wondering if I didn't get the A/T version by mistake.

As far as I can remember, the cables are fifferent lengths. The standard cable is shorter I belive but the end going to the trans should be the same. On the other hand, maybe there really is a difference and I just never noticed before.

This is a good question......
