What a great reference!

I have tried the search function but have not been successful.

I have a RHD 230SL Auto and am having a slight issue with some detail.
My ignition barrel does not line up with the hole in the dash, and it appears that my column stalk is positioned incorrectly also (sits too low on the rhs).

Its as if the whole steering assembly could be rotated anticlockwise a few degrees to achieve the desired result.

So Before I start disassembling the car, is this at all possible or likely?
What is the likely root cause, and what is the plan of attack?
I understand that the ignition barrel is clamped to the column, and that the column switch is obviously attached to the column.

Many thanks in advance!!

Bill

The only way I know to realign you ignition lock is to realign the steering column. Even if the bolt that holds your lock assembly to the steering column came loose, your ignition lock would not be so retracted. Adjusting your steering column is not for the faint of heart! I know by experience. You have to remove the air vent, fit your hand inside and remove your instrument that are bolted to the back. If you do this, know that there is a ground wire (brown) that is attached to these bolts for both the speedo and rev counter. There are two long bolts that come through a clamps that fastens your steering housing  (you can see the heads of these bolts and the clamp by peering under your steering column, just at the edge of the dash)   and bolted behind your instruments. You have to loosen these to reposition your column. Additionally, you may have to loosen the foot of your steering column at the joint with your steering box. You get to this by undoing the plate in your footwell. Best of luck!

If someone has used the steering lock to prevent  column rotation when removing the steering wheel the mounting tube of the steering lock can get bent, casing misalignment.

Bill,

Welcome to the Group. There are a few of us in the Melbourne area with Pagodas that belong to the Pagoda SL Group.  Ask all the questions.

I note your radio is like mine, from a Post 60’s car but you have a 230?

If you are not wanting to do the work yourself PM me and I can give you the name of several specialists on our W113 cars.

Thanks for the prompt and detailed replies.
Yes, The previous owner decided to install a DIN sized CD player in the car. it was easier to source a din sized becker rather than a smaller unit and restore/replace the centre panel. Now I'm chasing the appropriate Hirschman aerial.
I intend on giving it a try myself. everything is possible with the right tools, time, and the right mindset! it works as it is, but the mispositioning of both the stalk (which stops the rubber boot from being fitted correctly) and the malaligned ignition switch are annoying me. I think a weekend ought to get it done. Its a matter of just finding that appropriate weekend!

Actually I wouldnt mind the details of appropriate specialists.. I will eventually need to get a "professional" to tinkle with it on an annual basis!

thanks yet again,

Bill

Hi Bill,

For an annual service, mechanical work I can recommend Joe at Classique Motors in Thistlewait st Port Melbourne on 9 690 5444. For restoration type work and engine rebuild there is Reinhard Clavers out at  Jesmond St Croydon  Mobile 0419 513 177

Both have worked on my cars and both have been good to work with.
