Hi Rob,

The pictures of the original engine bays I believe you are referring to, does not show the rubber plugs because they are painted, but because there are no rubber plugs in the inner fender sidewall on the earlier 280s. But if your car has them, they where as you noticed, originally painted. No 230 or 250's ever had those holes/ plugs. Trying to adjust to the judges detailed knowledge or lack thereof will be impossible.
I agree with Gael, be confident and do it the way you know is original and correct way.

The engine bay paint should be the same paint as everywhere else.

Thanks All,

I will spray the plugs but I might spray them outside of the car - for several reasons :

1) So if they are removed they wont peel off paint.
2) So the edge of the hole is painted also
3) In case I don't like - I can remove the paint from the plug or simply buy new plugs :)

Hi rob,
 Sorry I did not reply earlier. As others have mentioned, earlier 280s did not have the holes/rubber plug in the fenders which accounts for mine not having them. I am not able to check my car right away but I do seem to recollect that there are rubber grommets in the engine bay that might be painted. I will check and let you know in a few weeks.

I may be very difficult to put painted plugs in the holes without cracking the paint on the plugs.  Maybe 2 steps paint the hole, insert the plug, paint again.  Good point below, degrease and prep the bubber befor painting.

Tom Colitt addressed the issue of the plugs being painted where fitted a few years ago when he examined a low mile original that was taken apart for painting. the plugs were apparently painted in place and due to the rubber being covered with release agent from molding it would appear that most of the paint has fallen off over time. I didn't go over the post again but I do recall some photographs of the rings of primer around the holes where the plugs were installed as evidence.
