shock mountings

I noticed the rear shock top mounting had the washers on upside down from what the BBB shows and states "important make sure the washers are on the correct way" The PO had changed the shocks for some Koni's to try and improve the dip and dive, though he told me it didn't make any difference, and I guess the mechanic installed the washers on cup side down. This looks like it is the way they should go but it's not the way the manual shows. Easy fix, I thought, and maybe it will effect the way the car rides. So I flipped them over and then I checked to see how tight they should be. Here is where it gets confusing. The Haynes manual states on page 185, I believe, that the top nuts should be tightened only to the point where no threads are visible above the nut. The BBB (both versions) show this in the diagrams(no exposed thread), but it states that the nut should be tightened to the end of the threads, which I take to mean all the way tight. When I tighten them all the way, there is 3/8" (1 cm.) of thread showing above the locking nut and the rubbers are significantly compressed.
I THINK the car handled better, but I'm probably dreaming or looking for excuses to go for test runs :D
