No Heat Shield ?
« on: September 01, 2004, 12:51:57 »
On my car, an early 1969 (-007537) I find no heat shield on top of the exhaust manifold. I think there, maybe, should be one. Could someone please post a picture of the heat shield and maybe give me a part number, please ?

This heat shield is available for around $100 (for the earlier 280SL's, up to engine # 008388 for automatics). It goes in between the intake and the exhaust manifolds. Later engines use a $40 shield (so the catalog I am looking at says). Attached is a picture, part no. 24:

There were no heatshield on my 1969 (007422) either. I always figured that the previous owner forgot to put it back after some manifoil work, but perhaps this is not a standard part?

Anyway I got a new one including the fastener strips from http://sls.sparebase.de/bin/dbframes.phtml?mid=IN02

PS. Cees - seems like we were writing the reply at the same time.

Thank you very much. It looks like the heat shield fastens to these elongated hose clamps, which, in turn, just clamp to the manifold? Do they clamp to the intake manifold?  I have no threaded holes on the exhaust manifold. BTW you guys in Europe were supposed to sleep when I asked the question about noon my time. You're 9 hours ahead.

I’d like to amend my earlier post: I can see now where the heat shield fastens to the intake manifold. There are two saddles for hose clamps cast into the intake manifold. I also have a picture of an engine bay where the tops of those hose clamps are barely visible – if you know what to look for. That is my biggest problem: If something is missing, I don’t even know it. Thank you very much for helping.
