Production Numbers
« on: September 02, 2004, 19:14:11 »
I've found how many 280 SL's were produced each year, but can't seem to find the actual chasis numbers for each year.  For example: what numbers end early 280 and start late 280's.  Thanks for anyone's help!

Strange, my 63 is # 6306 Sep 64.
Could it be titled as a wrong year?
Is there a significant difference between a 63 & 64 that I could look for?

Well....
THat puts the old girl as manufactured sometime in November 1964, though the US title says it is a 1965 car, maybe thats when it was imported???

Hey Idle Swede,

Are you basing your 1963 on a DMV registration/title or on the data card that came with the car? The latter is usually more reliable.

Idle Swede,
I can't explain why your title would be wrong.  The MB Data Card is the authoritative document on production date, but I think the sources for our database are accurate.  Perhaps the original owner ordered the car in '63 and that's what he had the Dept. of Motor Vehicles put on the title.  I don't think those people verify anything.

Malc,
In the US, the "model year" does not correspond to the date manufactured.  For example, the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320 CDI is now on sale, obviously built in 2004.  Your car was probably built, imported, and sold in 1964 as a "model year" 1965 vehicle.  In Europe (and elsewhere?), they did not do this.  I don't know the current practices around the world, but 30 - 40 years ago, the Europeans labeled a car by date of manufacture, not by the marketing people's "model year".
