Gearbox, input shaft end play
« on: October 28, 2014, 20:32:34 »
Hello,

The input shaft of my gearbox (4spd manual) shows a lateral play of +/- 1,5mm, measured at the tip of the shaft, and of course gearbox removed of the engine. Seems big, but I carefully checked: no longitudinal end play, bearing seems to be properly shimmed.
So I somehow doubt that renewing the bearing will really improve matters.
Any clue? what should be "normal" lateral play of this shaft?

Thanks,
Didier

If you were not having any problems before, you are probably ok. You couly shim  to cut the play a bit.    Excessive end play here can cause the transmission to pop out of fourth gear.

Thanks Joe,
I didn't have problems with the gearbox nor undue noise or big noise difference between 4th and indirect gears, so I think I will check the shimming and reassemble as is.
By the way, the shims fot this gearbox are the same as for W116 gearboxes (I have a spare shim that just fits).

Also make sure the end of your shaft is not scored. This happens when the pilot bearing goes bad. Scoring will allow for play. Don't forget to fit a new pilot bearing when you reinstall the transmission.
